The reaction of α,β-unsaturated ketones or Mannich bases of ketones with primary aromatic amines and ketones (monoketones or dimedone) in the presence of polyhaloalkanes leads to pyridinium, 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinolinium, or sym-octahydroacridinium salts.The reaction of benzalcyclohexanone with primary aromatic amines and malonodinitrile makes it possible to obtain 2-amino-3-cyano-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinolinium salts.
