(o-Carbonylphenoxy)acetyl chlorides are dehydrochlorinated to the corresponding (o-carbonylphenoxy)ketenes which undergo a <2 + 2> cycloaddition reaction to yield tricyclic β-lactones which spontaneously decarboxylate to benzofurans.
