Treatment of tin tetrachloride with 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyllithium (supermesityllithium, 1) in a 1/2 molar ratio, by rearrangement of one supermesityl group leads to dichloro<2-methyl-2(3,5-di-t-butylphenyl)propyl>supermesitylstannane (2).However, addition of 1 to an excess of tin tetrachloride yields dichlorodisupermesitylstannane (3) as the expected transarylation product.The structures of 2 and 3 were confirmed by X-ray crystallography.
