Synthesis and crystal structure of cis-1-benzylidene-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene, containing an unexpected conformation of the cyclohexylidene ring

Two isomers of 1-benzylidene-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene have been synthesized by the Wittig reaction, and the crystal structure of the cis-isomer has been solved .The compound C17H16 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/n with a = 9.796(2), b = 5.490(5), c = 23.215(3) Angstroem, β = 95.11(2) deg, and Z = 4.The structure was determined by direct methods, and refined by full-matrix least squares to R = 0.047 for 1104 reflections.The cyclohexylidene ring has the unusual envelope C_s^2,10 conformation.
