Synthesis and Reactions of Ester-Substituted Fulvenes. A New Route to Δ9(12)-Capnellene

The condensation of cyclopentadienecarboxylic acid ester with aldehydes produces ester-substituted fulvenes regioselectively.The products undergo both intermolecular and intramolecular <6+2> cycloadditions to give the synthetically useful linearly fused tricyclopentanoids.A formal synthesis of Δ⁹⁽¹²⁾-capnellene is reported.
