Auxiliary-modified allylic sulfoxides 2-5 exhibit greatly biased ambient temperature sulfinyl epimeric equilibria brought about by the reversible sulfoxide-sulfenate rearrangement, and provide lithio anions that undergo highly regio- and diastereoselecrive conjugate addition reactions with cyclopentenone, and in the case of reagent 5, to cyclohexenone.
