Tricyclic keto-diols have been synthesised by a three-step annulation procedure in which hydroxyenones, prepared by the coupling of 2-cyclohexen-1-one with aldehydes, are diastereoselectively epoxidised and the syn-epoxides cyclised with tin(IV) chloride.
