This study provides strong evidence for stereoelectronic control of diastereoselectivity in the Diels-Alder cycloaddition of sterically unbiased 5-(4-X-phenyl)-5-phenylcyclopentadienes 1 (X = NO2, Cl, and N(CH3)2) with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMA
