1,2-Ethano-syn-[2.n](1,6)phenanthrenophanes; first isolated syn-phenanthrenophanes

The title compounds were prepared by the photocycloaddition of vinylphenanthrene derivatives in 38-49% yields. This method gave syn-phenanthrenophanes exclusively, although other reported methods gave syn- and anti-isomers together. The syn conformation was proved by several spectroscopic methods.
