Ph3AsI2 oxidises Co2(CO)8 in a 6:1 molar ratio to produce the novel complex <(Ph3AsI)2I> in quantitative yield, the first crystallographically characterised complex containing a cobalt(II)-tertiary arsine bond and the unusual linear cation ⁺.
