Synthesis, spectra and crystal structures of complexes of ambidentate C6H5C(O)C(NO)CN-

Compounds of Ni^II, Cu^II, Pb^II, Ag^I, Tl^I, Sn^IV and Sb^V with the oxime C₆H₅C(O)C(NOH)CN (HL) were obtained from water, alcohol or acetonitrile solutions. The copper(II) complexes have been prepared in high yields using metallic copper powder. The compounds were characterized by IR, UV/VIS spectroscopy, magnetochemistry and X-ray analysis. The crystal and molecular structures of [CuL₂(H₂O)] and [CuL₂(4-mpy)₂] (4-mpy = 4-methylpyridine) have been determined. In both complexes the anions adopt a cis-anti conformation, and the Cu^II is five-co-ordinated. The wide variety of co-ordination modes exhibited by the oximate are reviewed and discussed.
