We have successfully developed a ‘turn-on’ colorimetric
chemosensor for Fe3þ based on 1,10-phenanthroline. The
chemosensor is accessible via simple synthesis which
shows high sensitivity and selectivity for Fe3þ. The
chemosensor exhibits high selectivity to discriminate
between Fe3þ and chemically close ions (i.e. Co2þ, Cr3þ
,
Cu2þ, Mn2þ, Ni2þ, Agþ and Zn2þ) in conjunction with a
visible colorimetric change from colourless to light pink,
leading to the production of visual detection of Fe3þ. The
interaction of sensor 4 with Fe3þ was investigated in the
presence of MES buffer solution. The UV–vis spectra of
sensor 4 revealed an absorption maximum at 268 nm
which shifted to 278 nm upon addition of Fe3þ ions in the
solution. It is worth noting that a new band appears at
514 nm, which increased with an increase in the
N-(1,10-phenanthrolin-5-yl)-2,2-diphenylacetamide
(ligand 4 or PHMD)
One hundred milligrams (0.513 mmol) of 1,10-phenan-
throline-5-amine and 200 mg of dry KHCO3 in 3 ml of dry
DCM were added in a 25 ml Schlenk tube and stirred for
10 min to dissolve the amine. One hundred and thirty
milligrams (1.11 equiv.) of 2,2-diphenylacetyl chloride
was dissolved in 2 ml DCM and added dropwise to the
Schlenk tube and stirred for 1 h at room temperature. The
solvent was evaporated and the reaction mixture was
poured in 20 ml distilled water and extracted with DCM
thrice (10 ml). The crude reaction mixture was purified
with column chromatography by using 20% ethanol and
concentration of Fe3þ
.
