The dianion of 4-(phenylsulfonyl)butanoic acid (1: 4-PSBA) was used to prepare a pivotal intermediate 5 that was used in novel syntheses of indolizidines containing alkyl substituents in a variety of patterns at the 3-, 5- and, 8-positions.
