An efficient method for the stereocontrolled synthesis of the unsymmetrically substituted 4-oxofurofuran lignan 1 has been developed based on a stereocontrolled aldol reaction of the succinic anhydride derivative 20 with an aromatic aldehyde employing(±)-styraxin as a representative example.
