Chemical analyses, magnetic moments, electronic absorption spectra, and molar conductance values indicate that tris(3-dimethylarsinopropyl)phosphine (TAP) reacts with nickel(II) salts to form the five-coordinate cations [Ni(TAP)X]+ (where X is a monodentate anion). The aquo complex [Ni(TAP)H2O]2+ is analogous. The absorption spectra suggest that the cation has a trigonal-bipyramidal structure in which the organic molecule functions as a tetradentate ligand. The electronic absorption spectra and the chemical reactions of the complexes are discussed.
