Microvoltammetric electrodes have been employed to examine the oxidation of anthracene and 9,10-diphenylanthracene in aprotic solvents. The electrodes are of micrometer dimensions, and the small current minimizes distortion of voltammograms by iR drop. This is demonstrated for the oxidation of ferrocene in acetonitrile, methylene chloride, tetrahydrofuran, dimethoxyethane, chlorobenzene, and benzene. At scan rates of 10000 V s-1 in acetonitrile, the radical cation of anthracene is found to be stable. At scan rates exceeding 200 V s-1, the dication of diphenylanthracene can be observed in acetonitrile, methylene chloride, and dimethoxyethane, all containing 0.5 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate. For this compound, a comparison of the equilibra for the disproportionation of the radical cation in different media can be obtained.Disproportionation is favored in dimethoxyethane compared to the case of the other two solvents.
