Structural analysis of methyl α-L-fucopyranoside by X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and molecular mechanics calculations

The crystal and molecular structures of methyl α-L-fucopyranoside are reported.The sugar ring has the expected ¹C₄ conformation.The (1)H NMR spectrum at 600 MHz was fully analysed.The conformation of the pyranose ring in solution, derived from ³J_HH values, was similar to that in the crystal.All these features have been rationalised through molecular mechanics calculations.
