To a solution of 20 mmol of 3 in 40 mL of dry diethyl ether was
added dropwise 22 mmol of Grignard reagent in a total volume
of 24 mL of diethyl ether. The mixture was refluxed for one
hour, cooled to Ϫ20 ЊC and 20 mL of MeOH was added. After
further cooling to Ϫ70 ЊC, 40 mmol of NaBH4 (1.52 g, 2 eq.)
was added and the mixture was allowed to warm to rt over-
night. Diethyl ether and water were added. The water layer was
extracted three times with diethyl ether and the combined
organic layers were dried (MgSO4) and the solvent was evapor-
ated. The crude product (brown–yellow oil, 5.75 g) was dissol-
ved in 80 mL of dichloromethane and a solution of 24 mmol of
Na2CO3 (2.74 g) in 40 mL of water was added. After dropwise
addition of freshly distilled acryloylchloride (22 mmol, 1.99 g),
the mixture was stirred overnight and the layers were separated.
The water layer was washed once with CH2Cl2. The combined
organic layers were washed with a 10% Na2CO3 solution and
brine, dried with MgSO4 and the solvent was evaporated. Puri-
fication by column chromatography (pet. ether (40–60)–EtOAc
