It is shown that C, N, and O nucleophiles smoothly cleave the hydrogenated ring of quaternized tetrahydro-γ-carbolines to give isotryptamine derivatives with a CH₂Z substituent in the 3 position (Z = Me, Ph, CN, OEt, piperidino, and morpholino)
