The interaction between N-tosylglycine and the copper (II) ion in aqueous solution at different pH values gives rise to the formation of four compounds of formula Cu(TsglyH)//24H//2O, 2O, left bracket Cu(Tsgly)(H2O)//3 right bracket , and k2 left bracket Cu(Tsgly)//2 right bracket , which exists in two forms, one blue and one violet (TsglyH equals N-tosylglycinate ion; Tsgly- N-tosylglycinate dianion). All the compounds were characterized by means of thermal, spectroscopic, magnetic, and structural measurements. For two compounds, the left bracket Cu(Tsgly)(H//20)//3 right bracket and K//2 left bracket Cu(Tsgly)//2 right bracket (blue form), the crystal structures were also determined by three-dimensional X-ray diffraction. The left bracket Cu(Tsgly(H//D 20//3 right bracket complex crystallizes in the monoclinic P2//1/c space group with four molecules in the unit cell of dimensions a equals 13. 690 (1) A, b equals 10. 333 (1) A, and beta equals 109. 03 (1) degree . Least-squares refinement of 232 variables led to a conventional R index of 0. 043 for 1735 independent reflections. 52 refs.
