The reaction of ^2- with oxygen gives an almost quantitative yield of the new red-orange ^2- dianion, which has been isolated in a crystalline state as the trimethylbenzylammonium salt and characterized by a X-ray study.This new cluster may be regarded as model for an oxygen atom adsorbed on a metal surface.
