Basidiomycete Sesquiterpenes: The Silica Gel Induced Degradation of Velutinal Derivatives

Derivatives of the pentacyclic sesquiterpene velutinal, occurring as fatty acid esters in Lactarius species and in other Basidiomycetes, from a number of previously isolated furanoid sesquiterpenes when degraded by silica gel.On the basis of the structure of isolated intermediates and products, a mechanism for the degradation is proposed.
