the relative shift of the Dipp Pr signals of the CAAC during H VT-
NMR studies. However, since the equilibrium was found to be disad-

mation of the free-carbene could not be confirmed unequivocally.

(15) Calculations used Gaussian 09 with geometries optimized with
the TPSS functional DZVP basis sets and including the effects of
THF solvent. All stationary points were subject to rigorous conforma-
tional searching using Grimme's XTB package. Electronic energies
were re-computed with the M05-2X functional and def2TZVP basis
sets, and included corrections for dispersion (D3) and THF solvent.
Energies in the text are free energies. . 2NH also exhibits a low energy
conformation at -6.3 kcal/mol in which the menthyl substituent adopts
a twist-boat configuration. See ESI for full details and references.

(17) Following a comment from a reviewer, we checked that this
exchange reaction is zero order in carbene 1, which supports a disso-
ciative mechanism for the reductive elimination. This has been con-
firmed by DFT calculations. See ESI for full details.
