Preparation of phenylplatinum-zirconium complexes with Ph2PC5H4 or PhP(C5H4)2 bridging ligands and their reactions with carbon monoxide

Reaction of [PtPh₂(cod)] or [PtClPh(cod)] with (Ph₂PC₅H₄)₂ZrCl₂ yields the Ph₂PC₅H₄-bridged species [PtXPh(Ph₂PC₅H₄)₂ZrCl₂] (X = Ph, Cl). Treatment of [PtPh₂(cod)] or [PtClPh(cod)] with 2 equiv of PhP(C₅H₄)₂ZrCl₂, prepared by reaction of [ZrCl₄(THF)₂] with (TlC₅H₄)₂PPh, yields cis- [PtPh₂{PhP-(C₆H₄)₂ZrCl ₂}₂] or trans-[PtClPh{PhP(C₅H₄)₂ZrCl₂} ₂]. Each of the mixed-metal complexes has been isolated as an air-sensitive solid and characterized by elemental analysis and NMR spectroscopy. [PtPh₂-(Ph₂PC₅H₄) ₂ZrCl₂] does not react with carbon monoxide, and cis-[PtPh₂{PhP(C₅H₄)₂ZrCl ₂}₂] undergoes a slow displacement of phosphine by CO, whereas the two chlorophenylplatinum complexes undergo smooth carbonylation to the corresponding benzoylplatinum species.
