The enhanced stability of the metal-to-carbon bond M-R (M equals Au, Pt) when R is a polyhalophenyl group (R equals C//6F//5, C//6F//3H//2, C//6Cl//5) allows the isolation of neutral, cationic or anionic aryl derivatives fo both metals, which are excellent precursors for the synthesis of polynuclear compounds or mixed clusters with unusual structures and properties. On the other hand, stable solutions of the neutral complexes MR//2L//2 (M equals Pd, Pt; R equals C//6F//5, C//6Cl//5; L equals OC//4H//8) are a suitable source for the preparation of otherwise inaccessible compounds.
