Alkynes react with methyl iodide, bromopentacarbonylmanganese (or dimanganese decacarbonyl), and carbon monoxide, under phase-transfer catalysis conditions, to give γ-butyrolactones; the reaction conditions are mild <35 deg C (1atm)>, and the process is a regiospecific one
