The recyclability of Pd(6%)/ES-IPr was investigated with con-
secutive Suzuki–Miyaura couplings of 4¢-chloroacetophenone
with phenylboronic acid (Table 4). Under the scale-up con-
ditions, the fresh solid catalyst Pd(6%)/ES-IPr still gave the
product in a 91% yield within 4 h. The Pd concentration in
the filtrate (after cooling to room temperature) is ca. 0.72 ppm.
The low Pd residue demonstrates the role of the solid material
in recovery of Pd at the end of catalytic reaction. The catalyst
could be recovered by centrifugation. After washing and drying,
the recovered catalyst was directly used for the next reaction
cycle. From the second to the sixth reaction cycle, no decrease
in activity of the recovered Pd(6%)/ES-IPr was observed. From
the seventh reaction cycle, the yield began decreasing but an 87%
yield was still obtained within 5 h. For the tenth reaction cycle,
the solid catalyst still gave the product in 83% yield within 7 h.
Additionally, the hybrid solid catalyst exhibited high stability in
air. No decrease in activity was observed after the catalyst was
exposed to air even for one month.

4. Conclusions
A new functionalized mesoporous material with organic frame-
work, a high surface area, large pore volume and a high IPr
loading was synthesized through a co-condensation of IPr-
bridged triethoxysilane and bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane. Such a
material has a good coordination capacity for Pd, and can
be used as a scaffold to design surface NHC-Pd complexes.
By tuning the coordination environments of NHC-Pd sites, a
library of heterogeneous Pd catalyst for the Suzuki–Miyaura
reaction were created. These surface NHC-Pd sites on the
solid surface show remarkable differences in catalytic activity.
Using acetylacetonate (acac) or 3-chloropyridine as a ancillary
ligand leads to the most active solid catalysts. The developed
catalyst represents, so far, the most efficient phosphine-free solid
catalyst toward the Suzuki–Miyaura reaction of challenging aryl
chlorides. A wide range of aryl chlorides even with deactivated
and highly sterically hindered groups were successfully coupled
under the mild conditions (80 ◦C, 0.5 mol% Pd). The good
coordination, facile derivation capacity and excellent catalytic
performances exemplified by IPr-functionalized mesoporous
ethane-silica probably imply that other surface metallic carbene
complexes can be created for more applications.
