Enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-stoechospermol 2, a representative of spatane diterpenes having a cis,anti,cis-tricyclo[5.2.0.0^2,6]decane skeleton, was achieved by employing a stereo- and regioselective intramolecular (2+2) photocycloaddition of (S)-γ-hydroxymethyl-γ-butenolide-derived ester 10.
