The photolysis of spiro left bracket benzo left bracket b right bracket thiophene-2(3H),1 prime -cyclopropan right bracket -3-one 1,1-dioxide (1) in benzene afforded 2-biphenylyl cyclopropyl ketone with extrusion of sulfur dioxide, whereas the irradiation of 1 in toluene or p-xylene formed photoreduced dimer and bibenzyl or 4,4 prime -dimethylbibenzyl, respectively. The photolysis of spiro- left bracket benzo left bracket b right bracket thiophene-2(3H),1 prime -cyclopropan right bracket -3-one in benzene afforded the valence isomer 2,3-dihydro left bracket 1 right bracket benzothieno left bracket 3,2-b right bracket -furan.
