The thermolysis of (η⁵-C5H5)2Zr2 (3) in toluene solution follows clean first-order kinetics to give (η⁵-C5H5)2Zr(SC6H5)2 and C6H5CH=CHC6H5 in high yield.Activation parameters ΔH^<*> 24.8(1.4) kcal mol^-1 and ΔS^<*>-4.56(0.39) eu for the decomposition of 3 were determined.A mechanism is proposed to account for the formation of (η⁵-C5H5)2Zr(SC6H5)2 and stilbene from complex 3.
