Water-Soluble Gold–N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes
in 1.5 mL H2O. After 40 h at 608C, the reaction mixture was
introduced on the top of a Waters Sep-Pak cartridge. Elu-
tion with water afforded 335 mg of the product (95% yield).
ESI-HR-MS: m/z=259.0787, calcd. for C9H16O7Na [M+
Na]+: 259.0794. See the Supporting Information for product
1H- and 13C NMR spectra.

[28] Without alkyne the pH values of aqueous solutions of
the catalysts recorded in the same conditions were 6.1
for 4a and 3.0 for 4b, indicating that partial hydrolysis
of 4b may occur in the reaction medium.
[29] Addition of buffers impeding pH variations (acetate,
borate, Mes or CAPS) has a detrimental effect, conver-
sions reaching less than 5% at room temperature after
24 h.

by the identical results furnished by experiments per-
formed in the dark and in daylight.
