An unusual, facile cleavage of C-N bonds of diethylenetriamine (H2NCH2CH2NHCH2CH2NH2 = dien) promoted by the reaction with the rhenium(V) nitrido complex to yield β-alanine (H2NCH2CH2CO2H = β-ala) is reported.
