α,α,α-trichloromethyl and α,α,α-trifluoromethyl aromatic compounds react with o-aminothiophenol and o-aminophenol in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) to produce 2-arylbenzothiazoles and 2-arylbenzoxazoles in high yields.
