Alumina nanotubes were fabricated using carbon nanotubes (CNT) as templates at 1473 K. The Al2O3 nanotubes were polycrystals. Al powders added with CNT were used as solid reactants, where Al2O3/Al mixture (1:1 wt %, 74 μm avg dia) was used instead of Al powder. Maximum production of Al2O3 nanotubes was obtained with a NH3 flow rate of ~ 100 sccm. When Ar, instead of NH3 was used as the protective atmosphere, Al2O3 nanowires were fabricated. If some O2 was added into the NH3 atmosphere, more Al2O3 could be produced, thus the yields of AlN nanowires, Al2O3 nanotubes, and CNT coated with Al2O3 particles all increased. Decreasing the NH3 flow rate had a similar effect with adding O2, because it increased the percentage of O2 in the chamber. But less NH3 lowered the production of AlN nanowires and thus higher percentage of Al2O3 nanotubes could be obtained.
