The freshly prepared catalyst of Sb-Mo-O system was only a mixture of MoO3 and Sb2O4, which was not selective for the ester formation.However, in the course of the oxidation of ethanol, some reduced phases such as Sb4Mo10O31 were formed in the catalyst, accompanied with an increase of ester formation.It is suggested that the reduced phases were effective for the ester formation.
