Ethylene uptake activities for catalysts 5 and 7 are
significantly lower than that for 4. We speculate that this is a
combination of two factors: first, the more electron-poor
heterobimetallics are slower to undergo catalyst activation via
pyridine dissociation; and second, a chloride from bpy-bound
ZnCl2 may bridge to Ni38 and inhibit ethylene coordination.
Thus, although ZnCl2 capture increases the steric bulk at Ni
and increases polymer Mn, it does so at the cost of lower rates
of propagation and activation.
Given the slow rate of propagation and the proximity of the
Zn−Cl bond to Ni, we were excited to attempt polymerizations
of 5 in the presence of a main-group organometallic such as
ZnEt2 that may be capable of chain transfer, envisioning that
the slower propagation rates would be well matched with chain
transfer rates to yield efficient chain growth. However,
treatment of either 2 or 5 with ZnEt2 yielded decomposition
In conclusion, several new Ni ethylene polymerization
precatalysts based on a pendent imino-bpy framework have
been developed. These precatalysts are capable of capturing
ZnCl2, which significantly alters polymerization behavior by
placing a bulky Zn−Cl moiety directly over the apical binding
site of Ni. While these complexes are slow to polymerize and
variants capable of chain transfer remain elusive, they provide a
tantalizing model for the development of systems that may
provide in situ catalyst modification via metal capture and
systems that may facilitate heterobimetallic intramolecular
chain transfer. Future studies will focus on developing similar,
more robust ligand scaffolds to avoid alkylation and examining
stereoelectronic effects on intramolecular chain transfer.
