work, the polarity of the CNT surface was altered significantly by the
removal of surface oxygen groups during nitrogen functionalization,
which may also influence the catalytic performance. Furthermore, 70

Oxygenꢀ and nitrogen functionalized CNTs were used as support for
the synthesis of Pd catalysts applied in the hydrogenation of 1,5ꢀ
cyclooctadiene. Pd nanoparticles supported on NCNTs showed a
narrower size distribution than those on OCNTs as disclosed by
TEM and XRD. XPS studies revealed that the nitrogen functional
groups on CNTs promote the reduction of Pd suggesting an electronꢀ
donating effect.
As compared to the Pd/OCNT catalyst, the Pd/NCNT catalyst
showed a significantly better catalytic performance in selective olefin
hydrogenation in terms of activity and selectivity. The extraordinary
catalytic performance of Pd/NCNT catalyst is attributed to the
structural and electronic promoting effect of the nitrogenꢀ
functionalized CNT support. The method employed here provides a
promising strategy to obtain highꢀperformance Pd/C catalysts for
selective olefin hydrogenation reactions.
