In the presence of potassium carbonate the reaction of isopropylidene 5-tosyloxymalonate with alkyl halides under PTC conditions gives sulphones.The reaction represents the first example of S-O scission of tosylate via S-O.As a result, a novel synthon equivalent to p-CH3C6H4SO2^- is found.
