(strain GIM1.27), which were obtained from Guangdong Institute
of Microbiology, Guangzhou, China. This evaluation was conducted
using the method previously described (Ma et al., 2004) with min-
or modifications. Briefly, paper disks with 10, 50 and 100 lg of the
eight iridoids and Ceftazidime (positive control) were placed on
agar media inoculated test microorganisms in Petri dishes. The
inhibition zones around the disks were examined after 24 h at
37 °C. The eight iridoids showed no inhibition zones towards both
test bacteria at all dosages. Instead, Ceftazidime exhibited obvious
inhibition zones against both test bacteria.

Activities of compounds 1–8 were assessed by using the meth-
od described by Duan et al. (2007) with minor modifications.
Briefly, 0.1 ml of various concentrations (5, 25, 50, 250 and
500
lM) of the iridoids and
L
-ascorbic acid (positive control) in
MeOH solution of DPPH
MeOH was added to 0.1 mL of
a
(0.1 mM). After 30 min incubation period at 25 °C in the dark, the
decreases in absorbance at 517 nm were measured. Controls con-
tained MeOH instead of the test compound solutions with contain-
ing MeOH instead of a DPPH solution. The inhibition of DPPH
radicals by test samples was calculated according to the following
equation: DPPH-scavenging activity (%) = [1 ꢂ (absorbance of sam-
ple ꢂ absorbance of blank)/absorbance of control] ꢀ 100. All tests
were run in triplicate and averaged.
