Cyclization of Substituted 5-Hexenyl Radicals as a Model for Photocyclization of 1,5-Hexadien-3-ones

An examination of substituent effects upon the photochemistry of a number of 1,5-hexadien-3-ones reveals a close parallel with those observed in the cyclization of 5-hexenyl radicals and permits for the first time a rationalization for variations in the regiospecificity of the intramolecular <2+2> cycloaddition reactions of these dienones.
