Nickel(II) complexes containing tetradentate ligands formed by the condensation of ketones with benzil monohydrazone in the presence of nickel(II) ions

The reaction between some ketones R¹R²CO and benzil monohydrazone in the presence of nickel(II) ions has been shown to result in the formation of complexes containing tetradentate ligands in which two benzil monohydrazone residues are linked by a single carbon atom from the ketone (R¹ = Me, R² = Me, Et, n-Pr, n-Bu, or Ph; R¹ = Et, R² = Et). The complexes have been characterized by infrared, visible, and ¹H nmr spectroscopy, mass spectral analysis, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The dinegatively charged ligands are coordinated about the nickel(II) ion in a square-planar configuration.
