The effect of different experimental parameters of the value of the rate coefficient in the photochromic process for the return of the excited form of mercury(II) dithizonate to the ground state is discussed.Special attention is devoted to the presence of free ligand under extraction conditions (from aqueous solutions) and nonextraction conditions.The observed effect is suggested as responsible for discrepancies of some published data on this photochromic relaxation.In the presence of excess ligand, a ligand attack favoring the ground-state form is proposed to explain the dependence.
