4.1.4. Synthesis of C60bar. C60mal (111 mg, 0.1 mmol)
and 5-bromobarbituric acid (21 mg, 0.1 mmol) were
dissolved in toluene/DMSO (v/v, 95:5, 150 mL) with
vigorous stirring. After degassing for 15 min, DBU
(20 mL, 0.2 mmol) was added. After stirring at rt for 2 h,
the reaction mixture was washed with water (60!3 mL).
The organic layer was separated and dried over anhydrous
Na2SO4. The solvent was then removed under reduced
pressure. The residue was purified by column chromato-
graphy on silica gel using CHCl3/MeOH (v/v, 10:1) as the
eluent to give C60bar as a brown solid. Yield: 17 mg, 12%;
IR (KBr): 3173, 2955, 2925, 2857, 1744, 1663, 1541, 1457,
1377, 1245, 1114, 1031, 880, 766 cmK1; 1H NMR (CDCl3):
d 11.1 (br), 9.3 (br), 4.6–4.5 (br, 4H), 3.7–3.4 (br, 16H), 1.5–
0.8 (br, 14H) ppmK1. MALDI-TOF MS: Calcd for
C83H36O11 (MC), m/zZ1236.23; found 1237.3 (MCCH),
1110.4 (MCKbarbituric acid), 720.1 (MCKbarbituric acid
ring-bis[2-(2-butoxy-ethoxy)-ethyl] malonates).
