Nysted Reagent Specification

The Nysted Reagent, with the CAS registry number 41114-59-4, is also known as cyclo-Dibromodi-μ-methylene[μ-(tetrahydrofuran)]trizinc. It belongs to the product category of API Intermediates. This chemical's molecular formula is C6H12Br2OZn3 and molecular weight is 456.14. What's more, its systematic name is called Bis(bromozinciomethyl)zinc; tetrahydrofuran. It was prepared by reacting dibromomethane and activated zinc in THF. This reagent is used in methylenation of a carbonyl group. The process is known as Nysted Olefination. There is no confirmed mechanism but a proposed mechanism can be seen to bottom right.

Physical properties about Nysted Reagent are: (1)#H bond acceptors: 1; (2)#H bond donors: 0; (3)#Freely Rotating Bonds: 4; (4)Polar Surface Area: Å2.

Uses of Nysted Reagent: it is used to produce other chemicals. For example, it can react with 3-benzoyl-4-oxo-4-phenyl-butyric acid ethyl ester to get 4-phenyl-3-(1-phenyl-vinyl)-pent-4-enoic acid ethyl ester. This reaction needs reagent TiCl4 and solvent tetrahydrofuran at temperature of -78-20 °C. The yield is 46 %.

Nysted Reagent can react with 3-benzoyl-4-oxo-4-phenyl-butyric acid ethyl ester to get 4-phenyl-3-(1-phenyl-vinyl)-pent-4-enoic acid ethyl ester.

When you are dealing with this chemical, you should be very careful. This chemical is highly flammable and it may catch fire in contact with air and only need briefly contact with an ignition source. So it may cause burns. What's more, it reacts violently with water. This chemical is inflammation to the skin, eyes and respiratory system or other mucous membranes. Therefore, you should wear suitable protective clothing. In case of contacting with eyes, you should rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

You can still convert the following datas into molecular structure:
(1) SMILES: Br[Zn]C[Zn]C[Zn]Br.C1CCCO1
