BORIDING IN POWDERS WITH ADDITIONS OF POTASSIUM FLUOROBORATE.

10.1007/BF00652003

The research investigates the boriding process using powdered mixtures based on boron carbide, with the addition of potassium fluoroborate (KBF4) to enhance the depth and wear resistance of the resulting boride case on steel parts. The study found that increasing the concentration of KBF4 in the mixture increases the case depth, with the optimal composition including NaCl. The boride case consists of FeB and Fe2B crystallites, arranged perpendicular to the surface, and exhibits high microhardness. The presence of KBF4 enhances the reduction of B2O3 to B2O2, facilitating the formation of active boron. The wear resistance of borided rollers was found to be significantly higher than that of carburized rollers, especially at the beginning of the test, and the wear resistance against cast iron blocks was about 50% higher than against borided rollers. The study concludes that boriding in open containers with specific powdered mixtures can produce an even, dense, and highly wear-resistant boride case, making the process suitable for small-scale production.
