Hydrogenolysis

Hydrogenolysis involves treating the N-arylsulfonyl-protected amino acid with hydrogen gas (H2) in the presence of a suitable catalyst, typically a metal catalyst like palladium on carbon (Pd/C) or platinum (Pt). The hydrogen gas reduces the arylsulfonyl group to an amine, while leaving the hydroxy group intact. This method is mild and selective, making it a preferred choice for deprotection.
