The systematic name of this chemical is Manganese oxide. With the CAS registry number 1317-35-7 and EINECS registry number 215-266-5, it is also named as Trimanganese tetraoxide. In addition, the molecular formula is Mn3O4 and the molecular weight is 228.83. It is a kind of brownish-black powder and belongs to the classes of Inorganics; Manganese; Metal and Ceramic Science; Oxides. And it is found in nature as the mineral hausmannite.
Preparation of Manganese oxide: The first method to get this chemical is calcination method. Burn the manganese or manganese oxides, hydroxide, sulfate, carbonate, sulphite, nitrate and potassium permanganate in the air or oxygen at temperature of 1000 °C. After a series of cooling and smashing, the Manganese oxide is obtained. The other method is reduction method: The manganese dioxide can be burned to give dimanganese trioxide. Then the dimanganese trioxide can react with methane gas at temperature of 250-500 °C. Then go through the operation of cooling, crushing to get the product. The equations are as follows: 2MnOOH → Mn2O3 + H2O; 3Mn2O3 +0.25 CH4 → 2Mn3O4 +0.25 CO2 +0.5 H2O.
Uses of Manganese oxide: it can be used as raw materials in the production of soft magnetic ferrite. And it can be used in manufacturing of optical glass, low temperature thermistors, transformer, inductor, magnetic amplifiers, saturated inductor, antenna stick, magnetic cores, disks and tapes for electronic computer, etc.
When you are using this chemical, please be cautious about it as the following:
It is irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. When you are using it, wear suitable protective clothing. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
