Biopol, with the CAS number 80181-31-3, is the commercial name of one such biopolymer formed from the monomers 3-hydroxybutyrate and 3-hydroxyvalerate. It is also called Poly-(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate); Poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate-hydroxyvalerate copolymer; Polyhydroxybutyrate-polyhydroxyvalerate copolymer. Biopol is an environmentally friendly biodegradable plastic made naturally in plants from starch and glucose, used by them as an energy reserve. They are used for injection moulds, water-based latex products, water-resistant coatings, fiber, and film. They are insoluble in water so this means they are great at resisting water and that's why they are used as water-resistent coatings, and such.
Physical properties about Biopol are: (1)ACD/LogP: -0.607; (2)ACD/LogD (pH 5.5): -1.85; (3)ACD/LogD (pH 7.4): -3.63; (4)ACD/BCF (pH 5.5): 1.00; (5)ACD/BCF (pH 7.4): 1.00; (6)ACD/KOC (pH 5.5): 1.00; (7)ACD/KOC (pH 7.4): 1.00; (8)#H bond acceptors: 3; (9)#H bond donors: 2; (10)#Freely Rotating Bonds: 4; (11)Flash Point: 121.2 °C; (12)Enthalpy of Vaporization: 57 kJ/mol; (13)Boiling Point: 253.3 °C at 760 mmHg; (14)Vapour Pressure: 0.00285 mmHg at 25°C
