The regioselective cyclization/dehydration sequence of ortho diketo phenoxyethers induced by DBU has been explored. The results demonstrated a high degree of selectivity with preference for 6-exo-trig cyclization leading to the formation of γ-benzopyranone derivatives in good yield.

A simple and efficient chemoselective alkylation of phenols in polyfunctional aromatic compounds with different alkyl halides in the presence of K2CO3/TBAB is reported. The method is successful with various hydroxy aromatic acids or oximes possessing other functional groups.

Methyl 2-,3-,4-carboxyphenylacetate and methyl 2-,3-,4-carboxyphenoxyacetate have been prepared through selective esterification of the aliphatic carboxylic acid function of the corresponding dicarboxylic acids using a mixture of phosphorus pentoxide (1 part), anhydrous copper sulphate (5 parts) and anhydrous sodium sulphate (5 parts).All the isomeric half-esters have been prepared through partial hydrolysis of the corresponding dimethylesters.
