The disclosure describes novel precursors for the preparation of chiral 1,3-aminoalcohols. The precursors are chiral 4-hydroxycarboxamides, 4-hydroxyhydroxamic acids, or 4-hydroxyhydrazides produced from chiral gamma-lactones, which in turn are derived from 1,4-diols by stereoselective oxidation. We describe a stereoselective synthesis of the trans-octahydroindole-2-carboxylic acid 2 a key intermediate in the elaboration of Trandolapril (RU 44 570) 1. The optically active starting material used was obtained by an enzymatic hydrolysis.
